Slug Generator: Clean URLs From Any Title

Turn a title or headline into a clean lowercase URL slug. Choose hyphen or underscore, drop stop words, cap the length, and get five variants.

A slug generator turns a title, headline or sentence into the lowercase, separator-delimited part of a URL. Paste How to Choose the Right Coffee Grinder in 2026, and it returns how-to-choose-the-right-coffee-grinder-in-2026, plus a few shorter variants. You choose the separator and the length cap.

A slug is a small decision with a long life. Changing it after publication breaks inbound links unless you also set a redirect. That makes it worth getting right at creation time, and worth keeping short enough to read, type and share.

What the tool produces

The generator returns five variants from the same input:

  • Full slug — every word, lowercased, accents folded, separator-delimited, capped at your maximum length.
  • Without stop words — the same but with common words such as the, a, of, in and to removed.
  • Truncated to 30 characters — a short form for compact URLs, cut cleanly at a word boundary where possible.
  • First 3 words — an aggressive short form for a section or category.
  • Numeric suffix — the stop-word-filtered slug plus -2, for when the obvious address is already taken.

The results are there to compare, not to use all at once. Pick one and keep it.

How to generate a slug

  1. Open the slug generator.
  2. Paste the title or headline.
  3. Choose hyphen or underscore as the separator. Hyphens are the safer default for public URLs.
  4. Set the maximum length. The default is 80 characters; the tool accepts 10 to 200.
  5. Leave Drop stop words checked unless the small words are part of the meaning.
  6. Press Run, then compare the variants and copy the one you want.

The transformation is mechanical: lowercase, fold accents to plain ASCII (Café Münster becomes cafe-munster), remove apostrophes, treat every run of other punctuation as a word break, collapse repeated separators, trim separators from the ends, then apply the length cap. It does not translate, invent keywords or check whether the URL is already in use.

How to choose the better slug

Option Example When it wins
Full slug how-to-choose-the-right-coffee-grinder-in-2026 The title is already concise and descriptive
Without stop words choose-right-coffee-grinder-2026 The full form is long and the meaning survives
Truncated to 30 choose-right-coffee-grinder Space is tight, such as a short share link
First 3 words choose-right-coffee A broad category page rather than a specific article
Numeric suffix choose-right-coffee-grinder-2 The clean address is taken and a redirect is not possible

Shorter is usually better, but not at the cost of meaning. coffee-grinder is a better slug than choose-right-coffee because it names the subject. The best slug is the shortest string that still tells a reader what the page is about.

Common problems and fixes

The slug is empty. The input had no letters or digits that survived the rules. Check that you pasted text rather than only punctuation or symbols.

Accented characters vanished or changed. They are folded to ASCII on purpose, because a raw accented character has to be percent-encoded in a URL. Münster becoming munster is expected. If you need the accented form, keep it in the page title, not the slug.

Apostrophes disappeared rather than becoming separators. Writer's becomes writers, not writer-s. Removing the apostrophe is the conventional choice and reads better in a URL.

The slug is cut mid-word. The tool truncates at the character limit and then trims any trailing separator, so a cap of 30 may leave a partial word. Check the result before using it. If the cut matters, raise the limit or use the first-three-words variant.

Stop-word removal changed the meaning. The Who without stop words becomes who, and To Be or Not to Be loses most of itself. Turn the option off for titles where the small words carry the sense.

Two pages want the same slug. The numeric-suffix variant gives you a starting point, but a generic -2 is a weak long-term address. Prefer a more specific slug, such as adding the product or year, over an arbitrary number.

The slug contains uppercase or spaces. It should not. If it does, the value came from somewhere other than this tool. Slugs are case-sensitive on many servers, so mixed case creates duplicate URLs.

The URL broke after publishing. Changing the slug changes the address. Set a 301 redirect from the old slug to the new one before or at the same time as the change.

Slug rules worth keeping

  • Use hyphens for public URLs. Google treats hyphens as word separators. Underscores are treated as part of a word by some systems, and they are harder to read in a link.
  • Keep it lowercase. Mixed case creates two URLs for the same page on case-sensitive servers.
  • Prefer ASCII. Transliteration avoids percent-encoding and makes the URL typeable.
  • Do not stuff keywords. A slug is a location, not a ranking field. A readable name is more useful than a comma-free keyword list.
  • Keep it stable. Treat the slug as permanent after publication. If you must change it, redirect.
  • Drop dates unless the date is the point. /2026/10/coffee-grinder is fine for a news archive, unnecessary for a guide that will be updated.

Slugs, canonicals and sitemaps

A slug decides one URL. A canonical tag decides which of several URLs should be indexed. If the same page is reachable with and without www, with or without a trailing slash, or with tracking parameters, the canonical tag builder shows every variant and produces the tag.

Once the URLs are settled, the XML sitemap generator puts them in a sitemap with consistent protocol and optional lastmod dates. And if you need to keep a section out of search entirely, the robots.txt generator builds the rules — remembering that robots.txt controls crawling, not access.

Frequently asked questions

Is the slug generator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser.

Is my title uploaded?

No. The conversion happens locally in the page, so the text is not sent to the server.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens for anything public. They are the convention for web URLs, they read as spaces, and search engines treat them as word separators. Underscores are mainly useful when another system in your stack expects them.

How long should a slug be?

As short as it can be while still describing the page. There is no hard limit, but 3 to 6 words is a practical range. The tool defaults to an 80-character cap and accepts 10 to 200.

Does removing stop words hurt SEO?

Not by itself. Slugs are a minor signal at most, and a shorter readable slug is usually better than a long one. Remove stop words when the meaning survives; keep them when they are part of the title, as in to-be-or-not-to-be.

Can I change a slug after publishing?

Yes, but set a 301 redirect from the old URL. Without it, every existing link and bookmark breaks, and search engines have to rediscover the page.

Bottom line

A good slug is short, lowercase, readable and permanent. This generator gives you the mechanical transformation plus a few alternatives, so you can choose the address deliberately instead of accepting whatever the CMS produces. Start with the slug generator, then settle the canonical with the canonical tag builder and list the result in the sitemap generator.
