EU VAT Calculator: Add or Remove VAT

Calculate VAT quickly with this free EU VAT calculator. Add VAT to a net amount to get the gross total, or remove VAT from a gross amount to see the net and VAT breakdown.

How to use the VAT calculator

1. Enter the amount.
2. Enter the VAT rate (e.g., 21%).
3. Choose Add VAT (Net → Gross) or Remove VAT (Gross → Net).
4. Get instant net, VAT and gross values.

Adding vs removing VAT

  • Add VAT: Net × (1 + rate/100) = Gross. VAT = Gross - Net.
  • Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate/100). VAT = Gross - Net.

Common EU VAT rates

Standard VAT rates differ by country: 19% in Germany, 20% in France, 21% in the Netherlands and Belgium, 22% in Italy, 23% in Portugal and 25% in Denmark and Sweden. Reduced rates apply to food, books, transport and similar categories. Always use the rate printed on the invoice or set by the supplier rather than a rate remembered from another country.

Net, VAT and gross on an invoice

Invoices usually show the net amount first, then the VAT rate and amount, then the gross total. If you have a gross figure and need the net, removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the rate. Dividing by 1.20 at 20% gives the net; subtracting 20% of the gross overstates the VAT. This is the single most common VAT calculation mistake.

Rounding and reversing a calculation

VAT amounts are usually rounded to two decimals. Rounding each line and then summing can differ by a cent from rounding the total, so match the method your accounting software expects. To check a figure, add VAT to the net result again: it should return to the gross amount you started with, within rounding.
