How the conversion works
The audio track is separated from the video and re-encoded as MP3. The video stream is discarded, which is why the output is much smaller than the original file. The conversion runs on the server using a standard audio encoder.
Choosing an MP3 bitrate
A higher bitrate keeps more detail but produces a larger file. Use 128 kbps for speech and general listening, 192 kbps for music, and 320 kbps only when the source audio is high quality and size is not a concern. Re-encoding at a higher bitrate cannot add detail that the source does not have.
Video length and processing time
Long videos take longer to convert because the whole audio track has to be processed. Very long files may hit the processing time limit. Split a long recording into parts if needed, or extract only the section you want with a video editor first.
