A PDF that is too large bounces from an email inbox or fails an upload form. Compress it here to reduce the file size, then download a smaller version that still opens and reads correctly.
A PDF is a container for text, fonts, images and layout instructions. Compression rewrites the file to remove redundant data and to recompress embedded images, which are usually the largest part of a scanned or illustrated document. Text and layout are preserved.
Scanned documents and image-heavy PDFs shrink the most, because their photos can be recompressed. A text-only PDF generated by a word processor has far less to remove, so the saving is smaller. If the file is already optimised, the result may barely change.
Do not compress a PDF that is going to a professional printer, or one containing high-resolution plans, medical images or photography where detail matters. Compression trades file size for image fidelity, and a print job can reveal the difference.
Start with the moderate setting for documents that need to stay legible and look normal on screen. Use stronger compression when the only goal is to get under an upload limit such as 5MB or 10MB. Check the first page after compressing to confirm it still looks acceptable.
The PDF is processed only to create your compressed download. The result expires after a short window, and temporary files are removed on a schedule, so the document is not kept permanently.
Upload the PDF, choose a compression level and download the smaller file from the results.
Text is generally preserved. The main loss is in embedded images, especially at stronger settings. Check the output before sending it.
It depends on the content. Scanned and image-heavy PDFs shrink a lot; text-only files that are already optimised shrink very little.
Protected files often cannot be processed until the protection is removed. Remove the password first, compress, then secure the new copy if needed.
For ordinary office printing, usually yes. For professional or high-resolution printing, keep the original or use the lightest compression setting.
No permanent copy is kept. Downloads expire and temporary files are cleaned up automatically.
