PDF to Text Online

Pull the readable text out of a PDF and copy it straight into a document — with word and character counts as you go.

Extract Text from a PDF

Copy the words out of any PDF. Upload the file and the full text is extracted with its column layout intact, so numbers in tables and forms stay on the right side of the line instead of running together.

How to Use

Click the upload area to choose a PDF (or drag one onto it) and press Run. The extracted text appears on the page in a box you can select from — use your browser's copy shortcut to grab it, or press the download button for a .txt version of the whole document.

Why Some PDFs Come Back Empty

A scanned document is really a photograph of a page, so it holds no text to copy — the same is true of pages that were saved as images. This tool reads the text layer that already exists in the file and does not perform OCR. If your PDF is a scan, you need optical character recognition before the text can be extracted.

Layout & Reading Order

Text is extracted with the original horizontal spacing intact, which keeps two-column documents readable and stops the columns from merging into one. Where the PDF itself contains the text in a strange order, the extracted text follows that same order — extraction cannot correct a badly built source file.

Privacy & Security

Your PDF is uploaded to our server only to extract the text and is deleted after processing. Download links expire automatically and your document is never shared or stored long-term.

Free & Unlimited

No account, no watermarks and no daily limits. Extract as many documents as you need.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PDF empty after extraction?

The page is most likely a scan or an image with no text layer, so there is nothing to read. This tool extracts existing text and does not run OCR.

Does it read the whole document?

Yes. Every page of the PDF is processed, not just the first one, and you get a download button for the complete text.

Can I copy the text straight out of the page?

Yes. The extracted text is shown in a selectable box, so you can select it and copy it into any document.

Is the layout kept?

Horizontal spacing is preserved so tables, forms and multi-column pages still line up when the text is opened in a plain editor.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

Temporarily, yes — the file has to be processed somewhere. It is deleted immediately after processing and download links expire automatically.
