Type or paste any block of text and six counters update on every keystroke: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time in minutes. The counters run in your browser while you type, and pressing Run re-counts the same text on the server so you get a confirmed figure to quote.
Most platforms measure limits differently. Word processors count words; social networks and form fields count characters, and some count spaces as well. This counter reports characters with spaces and characters without them side by side, so you can match whichever limit you are actually up against instead of guessing which one applies.
Sentences are counted from sentence-ending punctuation, paragraphs from blank-line separated blocks, and lines from newlines, with a trailing newline not treated as an extra empty line. Those three counts are what you need for school essays, submissions and CMS fields that ask for a paragraph limit rather than a word limit.
Reading time is calculated at 200 words per minute, a common average for silent reading of general non-technical prose. The minute figure is rounded up, so anything from a single word to 200 words reads as one minute, and a seconds figure is also returned. Treat it as a planning estimate: technical text, dense tables and skimming all change the real time.
Character counts use multibyte-safe string functions, so accented letters, CJK characters and emoji are each counted as one character rather than as the two or four bytes they occupy in UTF-8. That matters if you are writing in a non-Latin script or checking a limit set by a service that counts characters rather than bytes.
The live counters are computed in the page, and the text is only submitted when you press Run. Nothing is saved to an account, and there is no history of what you typed. The live count is there for feedback while you write; the server count is there so the number you trust matches a real recount.
Yes. All six counters refresh on every keystroke without any button press. Pressing Run re-counts the text on the server and returns the full result set, including lines and a seconds-based reading estimate.
Characters with spaces is the raw length of your text including every space. Characters without spaces removes all whitespace. A 100-character tweet with 15 spaces is 100 characters with spaces and 85 without.
At an average of 200 words per minute. The minutes are rounded up so short text still reads as one minute, and the seconds figure is rounded to the nearest second. Dense or technical writing will take longer.
Yes. Counting is multibyte-aware, so a character such as é, 字 or 😀 counts as one character instead of as the several bytes it uses in storage.
No. There is no account and no stored history. The counters run in your browser, and text is only sent when you press Run so it can be counted again on the server.
Sentences come from sentence-ending punctuation, paragraphs from blank-line separated blocks, and lines from newlines. A trailing newline does not count as an extra empty line.
Word Counter counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time as you type. Everything happens in your browser, so text never leaves your device.
How to use: paste or type your text, then press Run to get an exact server-side count.
